Cardale up and over doors are widely fitted across the UK, in both canopy and retractable versions, including ranges such as Gemini and Olympian. Many Cardale handles use a round barrel cylinder that can be replaced without changing the whole handle, which makes lost keys and worn barrels a quick and economical fix on these doors.
Where the handle itself has failed, or the cables and latches have worn, we replace those parts and adjust the door so it locks evenly on both sides.
Common Cardale lock faults
- Lost keys or worn barrel - the round barrel cylinder is replaced inside the handle, with new keys. See lock barrel replacement.
- Key will not turn - grit and corrosion in the barrel. See key will not turn.
- Handle cracked or forced - a replacement handle lock matched to the door.
- Door will not lock - cables stretched or latches not reaching the keeps. See garage door will not lock.
- Retractable door locks - often rod operated rather than cable operated, so the parts differ from canopy doors.
Identifying your door before we attend
Cardale doors usually carry a label or sticker on the inside of the door panel or on the frame, which may show the model and year. Send a photo of it with your enquiry, together with a photo of the outside handle and of the lock mechanism on the inside of the door. That is normally enough to confirm which parts fit, so the right handle, barrel or cable can be brought on the first visit.
Where an original Cardale part is no longer made, we fit a compatible replacement designed for that door type and check that both side latches retract fully and lock again when the door closes.

Manual doors only
We only work on manually operated up and over and side hinged doors that lock with a key. If your door has an electric opener, a remote or a wall button, you need a garage door engineer rather than a locksmith.
Frequently asked questions
Can the barrel be changed without a new Cardale handle?
On many Cardale handles, yes. The round barrel cylinder is removed from the handle housing and replaced, and new keys are supplied.
My Cardale door is retractable. Are the locks the same as canopy doors?
Not always. Retractable doors often use rods rather than cables, so we confirm the door type before quoting.
Can you fit a Cardale lock if I do not know the model?
Usually. A photo of the handle and of the lock on the inside of the door is normally enough to identify the right part.
