Why a garage door handle spins

On an up and over door the handle turns a square spindle, and the spindle turns a cam or lever plate inside the door. The cam pulls the cables or rods that release the side latches. A handle that spins means the link between the handle and the latches has broken somewhere in that chain.

Worn spindle or handle casting

The square hole in the handle or the spindle itself wears round over years of use, so the handle turns without moving the spindle. This needs a new handle lock. See handle lock replacement.

Broken cam or lock body

The part behind the handle has cracked or come loose. The handle may turn normally but nothing happens at the sides.

Snapped or detached cable or rod

The handle and cam work, but one or both latches are no longer connected. If the door opens on one side only, this is the likely cause.

If you are locked out

If the handle spins and the door is locked, the latches are still holding the door shut. Do not try to force the door open from the bottom; that bends the door and the latches. We open the door, find the broken link and replace it so the door works again. See locked out of garage.

If the door will not lock

If the handle spins with the door open, the latches may not engage when the door closes, leaving the garage insecure. Until it is repaired, a padlock through a ground lock or a temporary internal bolt is better than leaving the door unlocked.

Frequently asked questions

My garage door handle turns all the way round. What has broken?

Usually the spindle or the inside of the handle casting has worn. The cam or cables behind it can also fail. A photo of the inside of the door helps us tell which.

Can I fix a spinning garage handle myself?

If the spindle has simply come loose, sometimes. If the handle casting is worn or the cam is broken, a replacement handle lock is needed.

Will the door stay locked if the handle spins?

Often, yes. The side latches remain engaged until the mechanism is repaired.

Do you work on electric doors with handles?

No. We only work on manually operated garage doors.
