Garador up and over doors are common on UK homes, and the locks have changed across the generations of door. Older Garador doors used a different handle and lock arrangement from later models, so a replacement handle for a modern door does not always fit an older one directly.
For some older Garador doors, such as Mk3c and Mk4 doors with the old type handle, a handle conversion kit is available that allows a current handle to be fitted and covers the original fixing holes. We check which generation of door you have before ordering parts.
Common Garador lock faults
- T handle worn, cracked or spinning - replaced with a handle that suits the door generation.
- Old type handle no longer available - a conversion kit lets a current handle be fitted.
- Lock body failed - the mechanism behind the handle that drives the rods or cables to the side latches.
- Lost keys - a new barrel or handle lock with new keys.
- Door locking unevenly - rods or cables adjusted or replaced so both latches engage.
Identifying your door before we attend
Garador doors usually carry a label or sticker on the inside of the door panel or on the frame, which may show the model and year. Send a photo of it with your enquiry, together with a photo of the outside handle and of the lock mechanism on the inside of the door. That is normally enough to confirm which parts fit, so the right handle, barrel or cable can be brought on the first visit.
Where an original Garador part is no longer made, we fit a compatible replacement designed for that door type and check that both side latches retract fully and lock again when the door closes.

Manual doors only
We only work on manually operated up and over and side hinged doors that lock with a key. If your door has an electric opener, a remote or a wall button, you need a garage door engineer rather than a locksmith.

Will a new Garador handle fit my old door?
Not always. Older Garador doors use a different handle arrangement. Some can take a conversion kit, which allows a current handle to be fitted.
How do I know which Garador door I have?
Look for a label on the inside of the door or frame, and send a photo of the inside of the lock. The lock layout usually shows which generation it is.
Can you replace just the lock and not the handle?
It depends on the door. On some Garador doors the barrel or lock body can be replaced separately; on others the handle and lock are replaced together.
