Key Snapped in Garage Door Lock
Broken key extracted from your garage door lock, the barrel checked, and a new barrel with new keys fitted if the old one has been damaged.
Manual garage doors only - no electric doors No fix, no fee 24/7, emergency and non emergencyWhy garage keys snap
Garage locks are outside in all weathers, and the barrel gradually fills with grit and corrosion. The key becomes stiff, and the natural reaction is to force it. Garage keys are often old, thin and worn, and that combination is why keys snap in garage locks far more often than in front doors.
What to do right now
- Leave the broken piece where it is. Do not push it further in.
- Do not try to turn the lock with the remaining piece or with pliers.
- Do not put glue or superglue on a key stub to pull it out. It bonds the key to the barrel.
- Keep the broken half of the key. It shows the key profile.
- Take a photo of the handle and send it with your enquiry.
How we deal with it
- ExtractThe broken piece is removed from the barrel with key extraction tools.
- InspectThe barrel is checked for bent pins or damage caused by the break.
- Replace if neededA damaged barrel is replaced and new keys supplied.
- TestThe door is locked and unlocked and both side latches checked.
Will the old lock still be usable?
Sometimes. If the key snapped because the barrel was seized, the barrel needed replacing anyway, and keeping it would leave you with the same problem. If the barrel is in good condition and the key simply broke, extraction alone may be enough. We tell you which before doing any further work. See garage door lock barrel replacement.
Frequently asked questions
Can I get a broken key out of my garage lock myself?
It is possible with the right extraction tools, but pushing the piece further in is easy and makes extraction harder. If it does not come out easily, leave it.
Is the garage still locked with a key snapped inside?
Usually, yes. The door stays in whatever state it was in when the key broke.
Do I need a new lock after a key snaps?
Not always. If the barrel is undamaged and turns freely after extraction, it can be kept. A seized or damaged barrel should be replaced.
Do you work on electric garage doors?
No. We only work on manual garage doors that lock with a key.
Garage door will not lock or open?
Send a photo of the handle and we will identify the lock.
